The Shestack Public Interest Fellowship was launched in 1998 to address the shortage of attorneys working on behalf of underserved populations in Philadelphia. Recognizing that many obstacles prevent attorneys from practicing public interest law, including the dearth of entry-level jobs and daunting debts, the Fellowship provides support, training, salary and benefits to a committed young attorney seeking to work in the public interest.
Named in honor of Jerome J. Shestack, former president of the American Bar Association and champion of social justice, the Fellowship forms an integral part of WolfBlock's public interest initiative. The Fellowship is committed to providing attorneys with a strong foundation upon which to become good attorneys, and seeks to develop leaders in the Philadelphia legal community.
The Fellowship is designed to provide a young attorney with a broad range of training and experience. To that end, a fellow dedicates 50 percent of his or her time to working as a staff attorney for a Philadelphia non-profit legal organization. The remaining 50 percent of a fellow's time is spent working on firm matters. A fellow receives pay commensurate with an associate of the equivalent year, as well as benefits.
